Changing Seasons
poetry series, volume 23:
This poem is for anyone who has ever met a stranger in the mirror and realized, with a small ache, that it was still them. It is about the seasons we do not ask for, the grief of changing before we feel ready, and the strange tenderness of watching old versions of ourselves loosen their grip. It moves through the panic of time, the weight of self-judgment, and the soft surrender that comes when life begins repainting us in colors we did not choose.
The mirror reflects what you don’t want to see,
not yet, not now, please don’t happen to me!
You race to extract it, to tear the ache out,
as panic takes hold, and your heart fills with doubt.
You sit there staring, in sheer disbelief,
what some call nothing, others carry as grief.
Some choose to run, to cover, to hide,
as leaves change color, fall off, and decide.
It often arrives before your consent,
yet brings a new season, a graceful descent.
The sky may be grey, but your heart remains pure,
the mind can cut deeper than life can endure.
We worry too much about what others think,
then lose ourselves slowly, and slip to the brink.
There’s no need to worry, time makes you more wise,
no need to dress up in a youthful disguise.
Change is constant, and all things must fade,
hold on to this moment, embrace your new shade.
Besides, this new chapter looks real good on you,
so keep your head high, and cherish the view.
With love,
Scott

Every season asks us to become someone slightly different. Your poem reminds us that change isn’t something to defeat, but something we can learn to welcome with kindness. Beautifully written.
“The mind can cut deeper than life can endure” those words transported me back! I believe this poem encapsulates the shift from change becoming transformative. Love!
