Please, Don't Quit
poetry series, volume 24:
This poem was written for anyone who has spent years of their life working towards a goal with little to show. For those who are starting to doubt if they can accomplish their dream as the silence makes them feel foolish for believing in the first place. It touches on the seemingly insurmountable distance between effort and reward, and the private humiliation watching others succeed while you remain stuck in place. It tracks the mind as hope wanes, comparison sharpens, and every setback feels final. Beneath it all lives the heartbeat of someone who believes their work still has value…because it does.
You’ve worked so hard with nothing to show,
watched others succeed with effortless flow.
You have the vision, you’ve poured your heart out,
thoughts of quitting, your mind spirals with doubt.
You’ve affirmed for long, you’ve tried all of the hacks,
yet failure surrounds you, another setback.
You pray each day, you beg and you plead,
then take a back seat and watch others succeed.
Slow days and weeks and possibly years,
feel like gasoline on fire, ignites deepest fears.
You’ve waited so long, with faith and desire,
yet spend all your days pouring water on fires.
Growth is not linear, it twists and it turns,
sometimes without reason, or lessons to learn.
You must remember that life is not fair,
don’t let appearance deceive you, send you into despair.
We often compare to that which we see,
ignoring the struggles, late nights after three.
Passion is sexy, but purpose should lead,
time is a factor if you wish to succeed.
Please, keep going, and don’t tunnel your vision,
don’t quit, just modify, or make a revision.
You are not weak, you may just need a nudge,
stop comparing to others, or holding a grudge.
Please, don’t quit, or let conclusions be drawn,
it’s said that its darkest just right before dawn.
I believe in you, keep going, your time is coming,
success will be yours, your soul will be humming.
With love,
Scott

“Don’t quit, just modify, or make a revision” felt like the truest line here. Sometimes perseverance isn’t forcing the same path to work; it’s caring enough about the dream to let its form change. This reached me at the right moment.
I show up weathered
Battered and worn
Not understanding
This journey I’m on
I thank you Scott
For encouraging me
To continue to press forward
No matter how daunting
This path appears to be
